It was introduced in 1986 and, just like with most ccTLDs in those days, only trademark-holding Finnish companies could register a domain under .FI. Since then, FICORA (Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority) - the entity responsible for the administration of the .FI extension, has gradually loosened the registration requirements.
