This announcement is to notify you of an upcoming database server upgrade. Tierra Hosting will be upgrading MySQL from version 5.1 to version 5.5 on all our servers. The upgrade will take place on Tuesday, December 9, 2014.
The new version has reached a level of maturity and stability that we feel comfortable integrating it into our fleet. Based on our tests, we expect to see improved performance and stability across all servers.
The upgrade process consists of several steps to ensure a successful upgrade and we expect it will take up to 20 minutes to complete. During this time, the database server will be unavailable for your website. This means that any websites -- WordPress, Joomla, or any other software that depends on the MySQL database server -- will be inaccessible during the upgrade process.
We apologize for the downtime during the upgrade process, however, due to the sensitive nature of the upgrade, the database server needs to be offline in order for your databases to be properly upgraded and to ensure data integrity.
We have tested a number of scripts against the upgraded database version and all have continued to work as expected without any issues. Our testing was conducted with popular PHP scripts (WordPress, Joomla), Ruby, and Python applications.
